World Photography Day

Porsche Carrera on the 1981 Manx International Rally

Walter Röhrl / Christian Geistdörfer - Porsche 911 SC - 1981 Manx International Rally

On this day in 1837 the French Government recognised the ‘Daguerrotype’ and photography was born! Luckily they gave it a free patent to the World with no copyright so we can all enjoy it to this day.

To mark this day myself I found the oldest ‘proper’ photograph I had ever taken to illustrate my blog post…

In September 1981 I went to watch the Manx International Rally with a University friend who had family there. I only had a Kodak Instamatic myself at the time, but I somehow managed to blag my sister’s Pentax ME Super for the trip! She only had a ‘standard’ 50mm f/1.8 lens at the time, so safely distanced shots of cars filling the frame around corners wasn’t going to work, so I learned about ‘panning’ technique and this was one of the results.

Considering this was from my first ever roll of film in an SLR and the car number suggests it was one of the first frames, I don’t think I did too badly, do you?

Sadly, they didn’t get such a good result as I did after the car broke a driveshaft and had to retire from the rally.

Why not mark World Photography Day yourself by booking a workshop to learn a new technique or photograph a new subject? Or maybe just generally improve your skills for any subject on an ‘Understand Your Camera’ workshop…

Get 22% off if you book a full day workshop or eligible one-to-one/private group or photoshoot before 1 September 2022!
